“The Tree that Escaped the Crowded Forest”

Known worldwide for his groundbreaking architectural designs, Frank Lloyd Wright was also a prolific designer of stained glass windows and other decorative arts. As avid followers of Wright, we have visited numerous of his buildings and homes all over the country, and always walk away with a growing appreciation of his design sensibilities. Though he was purported to be a real “S.O.B.”, his designs have stood the test of time. See our list below of a few of our favorite Wright places.

It wasn’t until we were approached by the Price Tower Arts Center in Bartlesville, OK, (more on this organization in a bit), about donating a package for their live auction in March to help with the annual fundraiser, that we realized there are connections to Frank Lloyd Wright here in the Finger Lakes, and certainly in nearby Buffalo, NY, too. We decided that we wanted to take one of our more popular packages, our Tiffany and Treasures Trail package, which highlights Louis Comfort Tiffany’s legacy here in the region, and features a couple of “hands-on” art experiences with local artists, and transform it into a Frank Lloyd Wright oriented adventure!

Our Frank Lloyd Wright in the Finger Lakes Experience package offers the adventurous guest, two, 90-minute “hands-on” sessions with local artisans during which you will create Wright-inspired pieces in Stained Glass and Pottery to take home to keep you inspired. You will also visit two of the local premier museums, the Corning Museum of Glass and the Johnson Museum of Art on Cornell University’s campus, to see the actual Frank Lloyd windows they have in their collections. The Johnson Museum’s exhibited windows are originally from the renown, Darwin Martin House in Buffalo. If your schedule allows, you can see the windows at the museum and then take an easy day trip to tour the Darwin Martin House. There’s nothing like standing in one of Wright’s interior spaces. You’ll get some other great swag with the package as well.

Arts in Bloom, 5th annual Steuben County Art Trail

In our fifth year, the Arts in Bloom Art Trail continued to be a free, family-friendly event, offering art enthusiasts of all types the opportunity to check out the studios and galleries on the trail. Many of the locations offered live demonstrations throughout the weekend, and the chance to talk with the artists about their work and what inspires them.

At F.L.A.V.O.R. Studio in Hammondsport, (and behind the Black Sheep Inn and Spa), we had the studio fully stocked with new work and really enjoyed talking with everyone that stopped by about how we are inspired by all of the repurposed and recycled items that we integrate into our work. Throughout the weekend, Deb was demonstrating some of her jewelry-making techniques utilizing shells and beads, and creating sheep forms out of recycled computer parts, while Marc was putting the final touches on a 6”x6” geometric stained glass panel, and starting the glasswork for a stained glass guitar commission.

F.L.A.V.O.R. Studio is open all year and we encourage you to stop by to say hello and see what we’re working on. Could be stained glass, beaded jewelry with recycled elements, repurposed furniture or mixed media pieces. You just never know. You can also schedule a hands-on class to learn how to create something of your own!

This year, we had a visit from Joely Zerbey of Ever Green Farms during Arts in Bloom to educate all of us about the benefits of eating local organic and joining a CSA, (Community Supported Agriculture). As a longtime member of the farm, the Black Sheep Inn and Spa will be a drop point in Hammondsport for Ever Green Farm’s CSA this year, which makes it even more convenient to join. Younglove Octagon House is added to Atlas Obscura’s definitive guide to the world’s curious places

With over 10,000 fascinating places on the list, the Atlas Obscura offers the curious and interested a reference point for exploration, both in their own back yard and across the globe. We are proud to announce that the T.M. Younglove Octagon House, and home to The Black Sheep Inn and Spa, has been added to Atlas Obscura as an architectural oddity.

Included in Atlas Obscura for its octagonal shape, and as a grand example of the ”Octagon Fad” of the mid-19th century, the T.M. Younglove Octagon House exhibits many of the characteristics of Orson Fowler’s movement. This structure is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

An excerpt from the listing states,

“These eight-sided homes are unusual to modern eyes, and stuck out when they were built in the 1850s as well. Octagon houses were for those who championed progressivism and didn’t mind standing apart from the crowd. Today, less than 1,000 of these unusual dwellings remain, one of which is the T.M. Younglove House in Hammondsport.”
